One Out of Five" Follow-up Data, We're Making Some Progress - Now It's "One Out of Six" Disconnected Youth

It's official. What we used to call "One Out of Five" (the percentage of Angeleno youth disconnected from school and work) has now improved to "One Out of Six." This means economic gains and local efforts to prevent youth from dropping out of high school over the past three years has actually decreased the number of disconnected youth in Los Angeles.

On May 26-27, 2016, the City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Board and Economic & Workforce Development Department held three public forums to discuss the findings of an economic report by Professor Paul Harrington, Director of Drexel University's Center for Labor Markets and Policy. Titled, "Declining Youth Disconnection in Los Angeles," Professor Harrington reviewed the recent changes that have lead to the improvements of disconnected youth. However, the percentage of Angeleno youth that do have early key, work experience is still unacceptably high and rising.
