Vernon-Central/LATTC WorkSource Helps Worker Gain Job in Construction
The Vernon-Central/Los Angeles Technical Trade College WorkSource Center (WSC) provided recent parolee Armando job training to join the construction trades and now he is four months away from acquiring journeyman status in his union.
The WorkSource Center, run by EWDD partner Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD), also provided Armando financial literacy training to help him improve his financial record by establishing a budget, build his credit score, and manage earnings from his living wage job.

South Valley BSC Helps Entrepreneur Launch Bakery During COVID-19
The South Valley BusinessSource Center helped pastry chef and baker Alina Cardenas launch Proust Bakery in April 2020, which has successfully secured wholesale accounts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hire LA’s Youth & LA:RISE Participants Hired at New LA LGBT Center Café
The Los Angeles LGBT Center recently hired participants from the Hire LA’S Youth and LA:RISE program to serve as baristas at the Center’s newly opened Liberation Coffee House, which provides a safe environment for disconnected and homeless youth to gain valuable work experience.
The café, which celebrated its grand opening on August 17, 2020, is staffed by graduates from the Center’s intergenerational Culinary Arts Training Program, which provides 300 hours of transitional employment, including detailed culinary instruction, hands-on experience preparing meals for members of the Center, and 100-hour industry internships at local restaurants and food service venues.

The South Los Angeles BusinessSource Center (BSC) helped married couple Jarvis and Josslyn Young grow their Papa John’s Pizza franchise, including assisting them in hiring new employees during COVID-19.
In 2017, the Youngs established their Papa John’s on Crenshaw Boulevard in South LA’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Their business experienced a dive in revenue during the construction of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project, which greatly impacted traffic flow and access around their location. The couple turned to the South LA BSC for assistance, which is overseen by the Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation’s (VSEDC).

The Hollywood BusinessSource Center assisted John Lyuh, owner of New World Camping, with obtaining a $10,000 loan through the City of Los Angeles Small Business Emergency Microloan program.
New World Camping is a small business located in Koreatown that sells outdoor sporting goods year round. John’s store, like many other non-essential businesses, unfortunately had to close due to the Safer at Home orders that took place back in March 2020.

LACI Hosts Virtual Graduation for Advanced Prototyping Center
On August 7, 2020, the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) held a virtual event celebrating its second graduating class from its Advanced Prototyping Center (APC), a fellowship program designed to provide individuals from underrepresented communities training and opportunities to join the cleantech workforce.
“Whether it’s an internship or a full-time job, we know that only together that we can create this great economy, clean up the air, fight climate change,” said Matt Petersen, LACI President and CEO. “The only way it’ll work is if we’re all working towards one direction together.”

Boyle Heights Technology YouthSource Interns Assist in Census 2020 Efforts
Five Hire LA’s Youth interns and YouthSource Center staff recently participated in Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Census Goodwill Ambassador Program as part of their Hire LA’s Youth summer internships.
The interns, who are enrolled at the Boyle Heights Technology YouthSource Center, participated in the Saturday, August 8th Census 2020 canvassing event in the Cypress Park community. Volunteers went door-to-door answering community questions, handing out census flyers and face coverings.

Paula is the CEO of Healthy Greens Corporation, DBA Healthy Greens Organics, which she established in 2015 to provide her community affordable healthy juices and fresh organic foods from local farmers.

Fifty Para Los Niños Youth Begin Virtual Internships at USC
EWDD partner Para Los Niños (PLN) recently placed 50 youth in a paid internship with the University of Southern California (USC). PLN is an EWDD contractor that oversees the Northeast LA and the Central Los Angeles/Westlake YouthSource Centers.
Over the next four weeks, these 50 youth will participate in 120 hours of job readiness workshops and sessions facilitated by USC, including sessions with the Public Health program at the USC Keck Department of Preventative Medicine, USC Annenberg School of Communications, USC Viterbi School of Engineering and USC School of Dramatic Arts.

At Risk for Homelessness, LA:RISE Helps Youth Gain Work Experience
At risk for homelessness, the LA:RISE program gave Esther her first job opportunity at social enterprise New Earth. Esther, 18, was searching for her first full-time job, but with little work experience she was unable to secure a full-time position and was at-risk for homelessness.
After learning about the LA:RISE program and social enterprise New Earth, Esther was excited at the opportunity to access paid job training and supportive services designed specifically for youth.

Clean tech incubator Grid110 recently selected 19 companies for its inaugural South LA program, ushering in resources and support for local entrepreneurs to build and launch successful businesses.

The South Valley BusinessSource Center (BSC) helped Cecilia Quiroa obtain a $30K federal loan, which helped her reopen her business, Cecy’s Beauty Salon, while adhering to new health and safety standards due to COVID-19.
After owning her Northridge-based beauty salon for nine years, Ms. Quiroa closed her beauty salon in March following the Safer At Home orders. She approached the South Valley BSC for help on how to survive the financial setbacks caused by COVID-19.
