Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of their mother, sisters Jenny and Christian (“Chris”) Zamora opened up their own respective dog grooming businesses with the help of the North Valley and South Valley BusinessSource Centers (BSCs).

“They are really helpful because they answer the questions that you don’t even know you have,” Jenny said. “You don’t even know that you need these types of licenses, you need this or that. They really do tell you what you need.”

The North and South Valley BSCs, both run by EWDD partner Initiating Change in Our Neighborhoods (ICON), provided the Zamora sisters with extensive business guidance including developing a service plan to obtain the necessary business licenses, Business Tax Registration Certificate, Federal Employer Identification Number and DBA registration (fictitious business name for financial purposes). These free BSC business services are offered to all Angelenos at the City’s nine BusinessSource Centers.

After learning the ins-and-outs of owning a dog grooming business by working at her sister’s business, Chris’ Dog Grooming in Pacoima, Jenny recently decided to follow family tradition and open up her own shop. Chris, who was pleased with her positive experience, referred Jenny to the North Valley BSC.

Similar to how Jenny sought out assistance from the BSC and benefited from it, North Valley BSC program manager Maria Luviano encourages other aspiring business owners to do the same.

“Ask questions. We are there to help,” she said. “The staff that work there are really passionate about helping the community and building the economic growth within our city. We are Angelenos ourselves, so what better way to give to our community than by helping business owners set their roots and grow?”

The BSC staff said that seeing the sisters’ growth is the most rewarding part.

“They bring the passion and we kind of just guide them through,” Maria said. “They do the rest.”

On Friday, January 31, 2020, Jenny held the grand opening of her new business, Jenny’s Dog Grooming, in Panorama City. In the presence of family, friends and other business owners from the plaza, she received certificates from representatives from Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office and LA City Council President Nury Martinez (CD-6).

They all congratulated her in bringing a new business to the San Fernando Valley and gave her their well wishes in having a successful business. Her shop officially opened for business on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
